Our School Council
What is the Rights Respecting School Council?
Our Rights Respecting School Council is a group of children, elected by their peers who meet regularly with school staff to discuss how to make the school a better place and to advocate for children’s rights both in school and in the wider world. Every year, each class elects two councillors who attend the Rights Respecting School Council meetings and represent their class.
How are School Councillors elected?
At the start of each new school year, pupils who want to be elected share a speech with their class explaining why they want to take on the role.
The adults in each class choose two boys and two girls whose names are then put forward to a class vote.
A secret ballot is held in each class for them to elect their representatives for the Rights Respecting School Council.
What Responsibilities do Councillors have?
In their meetings, School Councillors discuss a range of issues including things like the school environment, healthy eating and campaigning for specific rights. We believe it is important to teach children to use their voice to advocate for others on a local, national and global level.
When does the Council Meet?
We hold school council meetings once a fortnight on Tuesday afternoons and discuss a whole range of issues including things like school uniform, healthy eating, the playground and after school activities.
